- The purpose of cargo insurance is to protect against damage, theft, or destruction within the cargo transportation process. The insurance takes effect as soon as the relevant cargo starts its journey and ends when the cargo is delivered and unloaded at its destination.
- By having cargo insured, the customer is protected against additional expenses in the event of transport breakdowns or other problems that may occur during cargo transportation. The insurance will provide a guarantee that, in case of an insured event, the customer will be compensated for the losses incurred.
What are the limits of the freight carrier’s liability?
- The carrier’s liability in the case of road freight is regulated by the Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road (CMR). The carrier’s liability (CMR Insurance) is limited to 8.33 SDR per kilogram of gross weight.
- The carrier’s liability in the case airfreight is regulated the Warsaw Convention. The carrier’s liability (Air Waybill Insurance) is limited to 17 SDR per kilogram of gross weight.
- The carrier’s liability in the case of sea freight is regulated by the Hague-Visby Rules. The carrier’s (Bill of Lading Insurance) is limited to 2 SDR per kilogram of gross weight or 666.67 SDR per shipping container.
- The carrier’s liability in the case of rail freight is regulated by the SMGS/CIM conventions. The carrier’s liability (SMGS/CIM Insurance) is limited to: 17 SDR per kilogram of gross weight according to CIM, while SMGS establishes no limit.
Cargo insurance is voluntary and can cover goods transported by all types of transport means in Lithuania and other countries. At the same time, this insurance can cover freight and other transportation costs, as well as expected profit.
We distinguish three cargo insurance options:
- Cargo insurance against all risks;
- Cargo insurance against fire and explosion; ship’s capsizing, sinking, running aground or colliding with another vehicle or any object; accidents of land vehicles; unexpected events on the route; earthquakes, volcanic eruptions; land subsidence and collapse; strikes of lightning.

The amount of the insurance premium depends on the mode of transport, the route, and the type of cargo.
