Standard Euro pallets: benefits and measurements

Pallets help ensure that various loads (raw materials, products, etc.) are transported quickly, conveniently, and efficiently. The use of pallets optimises the processes of cargo transportation, calculation, loading, and storage, and the variety of dimensions of pallets enables performing operations with cargoes of different sizes and volumes.

In Europe, so-called Euro pallets are commonly used. The most popular types of Euro pallets (length, width, height), which are suitable for loads up to ± 2,500 kg, are as follows:

  • EUR/EUR1 – 800mm x 1200mm x 145mm
  • EUR2 – 1200mm x 1000mm x 144mm
  • EUR3 – 1000mm x 1200mm x 144mm
  • EUR6 – 800mm x 600mm x 144mm
  • EUR half pallet – 600mm x 400mm x 144mm

In addition to standard Euro pallets, another type of pallets, which correspond to Finnish standard (FINPAL) and are produced based on the SFS-EN 13698:2 specifications, are also widely used in European countries.

Pallets of the FINPAL standard come in a size similar to the EUR2 pallet standard. FIN pallet dimensions: 1200mm x 1000mm x 145mm. Suitable for loads up to ± 1,500kg.

One more type of pallets used in Europe are industrial pallets that measure 1200mm (L) x 1200mm (W) x 144mm (H) and are suitable for loads up to ± 2,000kg.

  • Euro pallets weigh up to 25 kg;
  • Industrial pallets weight up to 38 kg;
  • FIN pallets weight up to 33 kg.

What are pallets made of?

Usually, standard pallets are made of wood in compliance with strictly defined rules for the use of wood. Pallets made of cardboard are used for stacking lightweight loads. Apart from that, pallets can be made of plastic and metal. Being more durable, the latter types of pallets are also more expensive (especially those made of metal). Where necessary, non-standard pallets can be manufactured according to individual measurements and type of material.
